Stowe, VT 08/05 - 08/06

We move on east into Vermont, driving down through Grand Isle in Lake Champlain and over to Stowe - one of the big New England ski areas.

We went out exploring the first evening and drove up Route 108 to a place called Smugglers' Notch - a very cool and curvy road that winds up going through a very narrow notch between a whole lot of giant boulders and sheer rock cliffs.

We also drove through the main Stowe snow skiing areas, thankfully with none of the white stuff this time of year.

On Day 2 we headed out to explore the attractions in Stowe itself.  First stop was a Maple Sugar barn for some real Vermont Maple Syrup.  Then to the Lake Champlain Chocolates outlet and the Cabot Vermont Cheese store for some real Vermont Cheeses.

And who knew that Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream was made in Stowe Vermont.  We could have taken the plant tour but chose to simply eat the ice cream.

As well as the Green Mountain Coffee Company (just down the road in Waterbury) who also make Tully's and Newman's coffees.

And free tastings were offered everywhere - this place is incredible!

And then to top all that off - it turns out that the Trapp Family Lodge is also in Stowe - as in the Sound of Music Trapp family.  This is where they chose to live after escaping Austria in the 1940s.

So we finished the day with a nice seat at the lodge overlooking the hills that really did look like they could be filled with the sound of music.

As we return to camp we are watching the preparations for the 58th Annual Vermont Antique & Classic Car Meet which starts tomorrow and will feature over 900 classic cars and military vehicles.  We are camped in the middle of the farm that hosts the event and they are parked all around us!
